The Uganda Teachers’ Cooperative Savings and Credit Union (UTCSCU) which is an umbrella body that has very many teachers across the country saving has started the process of building low-cost houses for teachers countrywide.
Ms Joan Asiimwe, the managing director of UTCSCU, said many teachers have become homeless after retirement. And it is because of that, that they are starting the venture so as to secure the teachers accommodation.
She said that most of the teachers who end up homeless are those who teach in government schools because usually, they are privileged to teach stay at school until retirement and later find that they don’t have where to go.
She said the plan is to build three bedroomed houses that will cost a maximum of shs 35 million and these will be accessed by the teachers through loans.
For now, they are registering those who are interested in owning houses through loans and when they commence the plan, those will be the ones who will be considered first.
